The Burrell Collection

The Burrell Collection first opened to great acclaim in 1983; however, it had been showing the effects of time, and closed in 2016 for a massive refurbishment. Re-opening in 2022, the AV makes a significant contribution to creating an experience that can lead the way in museum engagement into the future.

The museum is in an architecture award winning building in a country park, well within Glasgow, and houses the art collection of the Burrells, containing art, furniture, and artefacts from three continents, and most periods prior to 1944 when the collection was gifted to the City of Glasgow.

A 6x2.3m Leyard video wall across the museum’s core atrium welcomes visitors in, giving them a taste of what lies around the corners, as well as visitor information. For events, the wall becomes a presentation screen, or can show video art, and music. The Corridor video walls stand tall at 2x4m, and draw visitors along the Corridors and deep into the museum, showing close up high definition footage of the artefacts in the cases in front of the walls, letting the visitors catch every beautiful bit of detail on all the sides of the objects.

Bigger galleries feature giant projections, showing replicas of the Falconry objects in use in the Falconry gallery; bringing the creatures woven into carpets to life in the Islamic Carpets gallery; and, with an interactive projection, giving visitors the opportunty to play with colour, showing the difference it makes to ancient sculptures. A mesmerising gallery featuring floral artworks has a projected cascade of flowers falling down the wall around the paintings, with the paintings themselves carefully masked off using the AV Stumpfl Pixera media servers, as used throughout.
