FLEET AIR ARM

The Fleet Air Arm Museum is home to Europe’s largest naval aviation collection.
When the Fleet Air Arm Museum developed its new ‘Physics of Flight’ gallery, it asked D J Willrich Ltd to create interactives to demonstrate the principles of aerodynamic control of aircraft.
Visitors use DJW’s touch screen animations linked to the aircraft to see and control the effects created by different aerodynamic control methods as the aircraft ‘fly’ through each of the wind tunnels.
It was vital that the integration and synchronisation of the action of the software with the aircraft in the wind tunnels was such that the effects experienced both looked and felt as realistic as possible.
Following a six minute AV show in the Concorde gallery, visitors step into the rear of the plane and are able to experience, for themselves, the full throated roar as if the aircraft had ‘taken off’. DJW created this impressive effect using a BOSE sub-bass system.
DJW also designed, supplied and installed touch screen ‘Info-Stations’ with technical detail and video clips on the history of the Museum’s aircraft, together with interactive games that allow the visitor to build and test their own plane designs.
