Winchester Cathedral

Kings and Scribes. The Birth of a Nation opened at Winchester Cathedral in 2019, with a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept taking visitors through over 1,000 years of history, whilst also offering fantastic views of the Cathedral.

DJW were appointed by Scena in October 2018 to supply and install all of the AV Hardware for this exciting project. After an initial review of the exhibition requirements, a final specification was agreed and work on delivering the system commenced, with a deadline of mid February 2019 set for handover.

The exhibition features a mix of technology with projection, audio points, a Pepper’s ghost and touchscreen interactives. However, one AV that is particularly striking visually, is the Triforium Stain Glass Window interactive. Here visitors get the opportunity to create their own stain glass window, mimicking the huge medieval west window located at the entrance to the Cathedral. High Brightness videowall screens are built into a 4m high arched window to provide a stunning display. Once visitors have finalised their design, using a touchscreen interface, they are then able to display their design on the large scale videowall.

Another interactive element is based around the Winchester bible, which is the largest and perhaps finest of all surviving 12th century English bibles. Using 42” touchscreens visitors are able to explore a number of pages from the manuscript, zooming into and translating text from Latin to English.
