David Willrich becomes President of TEA E&ME Board

Our own Managing Director, David Willrich has just become the new President of the Europe and Middle East Board for the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA). Having been on the board for several years, David has decided to take up the reins and continue to try to push the E&ME member numbers up.

The TEA is an Industry Association which supports networking of Companies or Individuals working within the Attractions Industry, with members from Manufacturers, Suppliers, Systems Integrators, Park and Attraction Owners and Operators and also students and Educational bodies. Members can enjoy organised events including Behind the Scene tours at Attractions across Europe, usually having had an input from a current TEA member; Seminars and events with Industry professionals; as well as general networking and access to all other members, with support from the industry gurus such as Disney and Universal Studios.

SATE is the TEA annual event, where Industry speakers provide different insights into Storytelling, Architecture, Technology and Experience; hence the acronym. In 2013 this was held in October at Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, Georgia; and was previously held at Disneyland Paris. SATE provides an environment to share diverse ideas and concepts, to challenge and inspire, to learn about breakthrough projects, best practices and trends, and to discover collaborative opportunities.

Five AV Awards Finalists!
Five AV Awards Finalists!

It what must be a record, DJW has produced five finalists in the 2013 AV Awards. These projects span four different categories, with four projects from Manchester, London and Hungary.

DJW’s work at the new National Football Museum is a finalist in the Consumer Installation of the Year, and AV-IT Integration Project of the Year. The first of these categories marks out DJW’s performance in creating a great overall experience through quality integration of the AV. The AV-IT integration category highlights the integrated ticketing system created by DJW to manage visitor flow through premium interactives and provide an income stream for the museum.

DJW’s other finalist in the Consumer Installation of the Year category is The View from the Shard. DJW integrated a premium experience for visitors, from the video walls on the ceilings of the lifts to the ticketing information.

DJW’s finalist in the Business Installation of the Year is a tribute to the immersive client experience that DJW created for clients considering transmission purchases at Allison Transmissions in Hungary.

And DJW’s contribution to London 2012 rounds out the finalist list. Nearly 47,000 people visited BP’s Olympic Park Showcase during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, where they were treated to an immersive experience that was then dismantled after the games. This is a finalist in the Green or Environmental Project of the Year for DJW’s commitment to sound environmental practices.

DJW would like to congratulate Titanic Belfast for being Highly Commended in the Permanent Exhibition category of the Museums & Heritage Awards. Titanic Belfast also won the Trading and Enterprise Award for their shop.

The Awards were given at a gala dinner compered by Sue Perkins as part of the Museums & Heritage Show, on 15 May.

Titanic Belfast uses AV integrated by DJW to tell the story of the design and building of Titanic, right on the site of the dock yards where it happened. Projections, screens, audio and a dark ride bring the history to life, while a multi-screen theatre, with a video link to research vessels, draws visitors into the immediacy of current oceanic research.

The BP Showcase Pavilion was also shortlisted for the Sustainability Award. DJW integrated the spinning 360 degree theatre with show lighting and special effects for BP’s Pavilion at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. DJW created a system that minimised energy usage, while being simple for the client team to operate, greatly contributing to the sustainability of the Showcase Pavilion.

DJW wins the prize for the Most InAVative Vistor Attraction of 2013.

Josh Miller, one of DJW’s Directors was there to collect the award and said:

“This project used so many aspects of AV in so many different ways, and is already attracting many more visitors than predicted.”

Titanic Belfast is home to some of the most stunning immersive experiences DJW has created. The AV-led Experience runs through 9 themed galleries, drawing together special effects, a dark ride, full-scale reconstructions and innovative interactive features to explore the Titanic story in a fresh and insightful way; from her conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to her infamous maiden voyage and catastrophic demise. The journey goes beyond the aftermath of the sinking, to the discovery of the wreck and continues into the present day with a live undersea exploration centre.

The awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Integrated Systems Europe trade show where some of the DJW team were meeting with suppliers and checking out the latest technologies.

DJW was also a finalist in the Most InAVative Leisure and Entertainment Facility Award with the AV integration at the BP Showcase for the Olympic and Paralympic games.
