GOD'S HOUSE TOWER

God's House Tower

“Stories Behind the Stones” at God's House Tower - once part of the Southampton’s medieval walls – has been turned into an arts and heritage venue with rooftop views across the city. The 700 year old tower was re-opened to the public following a £3.1m refit.

Having been appointed by the Moule Partnership, DJW completed the detailed design of the AV, initially ensuring the completed Power and Data infrastructure could be utilised fully to meet the exhibitions design requirements. Following meetings with the exhibition designers HKD, a final AV design was achieved.

On the ground floor “The French are Coming” uses multiple projections to take the visitors back to 1338, when the city was ransacked in a devastating French raid. Ken Hellyar’s model of Southampton Old Town provides a 3 dimensional relief onto which the story unfolds via projection.

The first floor focuses on the gunners, who were essential to the city’s defence during the 16th Century. 4 tapestries, animated with compact projectors tell the story of four Southampton gunners.

As the visitors reach the second floor an audio soundscape, with controlled lighting tells how prisoners were held within the tower during the 18th century. On this floor, as well as the lower floors, works by local artist Sarah Filmer, entitled “I am the walls” are projected onto the walls of the tower, bringing the stones to life.

Finally on the rooftop visitors can enjoy views across Southampton, with the addition of VR binoculars they are also able to see how the city appeared in past centuries.
